LoginWhen choosing a palette of colors for these handwarmers, I used the autumn colors I loved seeing when traveling in North Carolina a few years ago. The colors of autumn I see at home in Shetland are much less vibrant, and hairst refers to autumn in the Shetland language.
After knitting hundreds of handcoverings over many years, I’ve developed a shape formed with clustered increases, rather than a decorative gusset, that gives a cozy fit and works well with colorwork.
YARN Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift (100% Shetland wool; 115 yd [105 m]/⅞ oz [25 g]; fingering weight): #261 Paprika (MC), #289 Gold (CC1), #375 Flax (CC2), and #155 Bramble (CC3), 1 skein each.
NEEDLES Sizes 2 (2.75 mm) and 4 (3.5 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); stitch holder or waste yarn; tapestry needle.
GAUGE 30 sts and 32 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in patt on larger needles.
FINISHED SIZE 7¾" (19.5 cm) palm circumference above thumb and 6" (15 cm) tall.
