LoginAs I designed this shawl, with its crescent of braided cables around a field of garter ridges, it reminded me of the heroine in the French fairy tale “Persinette” by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force. A precursor to the Grimm brothers’ Rapunzel, Persinette lets down her long braids through a high window.
The ribbing and braid motif along the side of the shawl reminded me of this maiden, and the rows of garter stitch are reminiscent of the garden of parsley that sets the story in motion. I wanted to honor my own French ancestry with the girl’s French name, which means “little parsley.”
The shawl is worked end to end with the cabled border running alongside the main garter stitch section with attached I-cord edgings. It is an ideal layering piece, as it can be worn as a scarf, a shawl, or even a hood in colder weather.
YARN Ewetopia Ridge Fingering (100% wool; 200 yd [183 m]/1¾ oz [50 g]; fingering weight): Autumn Heather, 4 skeins.
NEEDLES Size 6 (4 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); waste yarn for provisional CO; cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.
GAUGE 26 sts and 39 rows = 4" (10 cm) in garter st.
FINISHED SIZE 59½" (151 cm) wide and 15¾" (40 cm) tall.
