As the last days of summer turn to fall, our thoughts turn toward what to cast on for the cozy months to come.

Don’t say goodbye to summer just yet! We’ve put together a collection of projects that are great to knit from summer into fall. From projects that are portable for that end-of-summer road trip—like the Butte Meadow Top or Power of Ten Socks—to the perfect wears as the weather starts to turn cooler—like the Raglan Lace Hoodie and the Grand Picot Chunky Scarf—this roundup is full of pretty patterns that are sure to delight.

Butte Meadow Top by Faina Goberstein

A three-season piece, the Butte Meadow Top can be made close-fitting for summer (like we did with the sample), or you may want to choose a larger size to layer over a button-down shirt and under a jacket. It’s worked in one piece, and needle changes create the A-line shaping, so it’s easy to cruise along once you’re familiar with the stitch pattern. It’s not no-brainer knitting, but you could make a lot of progress on a road trip—just work a few rounds to get established and bring along all the needles you’ll need.

Raglan Lace Hoodie by Amy Gunderson

The Raglan Lace Hoodie is knitted from the bottom up in pieces and then seamed. The short sleeves, lace, and cotton blend say summer, but the hood and wool content make this a great pullover for fall. The Lace Diamonds pattern is easy to memorize, and the large needle size makes the knitting go quickly.

Grand Picot Chunky Scarf by Lori Steinberg

Worked as a long garter lace strip and attached edging, the construction of the Grand Picot Chunky Scarf makes it almost mesmerizing. You can cruise through the easy-to-memorize stitch patterns of the base strip and applied lace edging without shaping. Handknitted socks are the ultimate project for both warm weather and travel: easy to stow in a bag, small enough not to overheat your lap, and using only one ball of yarn. The base-ten rhythm of this design (ten rounds of ribbing, ten repeats of the cable and lace pattern, ten decrease rounds for the gusset) makes it easy to tell where you are in the pattern.
